5 Months (draft pictures)

Not the official 5 month photo shoot, I forgot to do that this weekend. Scratch that, I didn't forget, we just didn't have time. WHY ARE THE WEEKENDS SO DANG SHORT??? I hate that crap. 2 days, really? 2 days to do eight million things (one day if you keep the Sabbath)? It just doesn't add up.
Anyway- Last Friday (the 18th) the weather here in the city was perfect. It was what almost (I think)every New Yorker has been waiting for. 74 degrees. Splendid. People broke out their flip flops and tank tops and crowded the parks. It was perfect. Josh picked Sonny up at the sitters and met me at work. After showing him off we made our way downtown and hung out at Washington Square Park for a little bit. Josh took these there. Today the high was 40. Bah.

Banana Worms

Warning. This is about poop. If you don't want to read about baby poop then stop. now. or when I mention to stop again.

There is a lot of back story here but I am going to try and give the quick version. Last Tuesday we thought we would try and introduce some food to Sonny. I know he isn't 6 months yet and in an ideal world I would not have had to start so early (one week shy of 5) - but in an out-of-breast milk-emergency home made baby food is going to be my back up]. I bought some organic baby yams from Fresh Direct and whipped up a tasty little concoction of pureed baked yams, breast milk and water. Sonny LOVED it (another blog post to come with pictures - and maybe video). He couldn't get it into his mouth fast enough. Ok, now fast forward to Saturday. Sonny still had not pooped. Granted it is totally normal for breastfed babies to go a few days without pooping, but not Sonny. He pooped like clockwork. So you can imagine how weird it was that it had been 4 days. He finally pooped. a tiny bit. Here is where you should stop if you don't want to see baby poop.

There were these little "things" in his poo. Weird little red/brown squiggles. Reminded me of saffron. Here is a picture:

A little alarming right? We decided to wait until the next poo to see if there were more. Fast forward again to Sunday afternoon. Still no poop. About to intervene when Sonny smiled real big and scrunchy and pooped a giant poop. In that poop there were a lot more squiggles. This is where I start to panic a little thinking Sonny has worms and how terrible that must be and how could such a thing happen?! I should never have given him those yams! Blasted Yams! I Hate you!

My friend/ one of Sonny's sitters came by to drop off some essential oils for his constipation and took at look at the "worms". She confirmed what I already knew - it wasn't yam fibers. We tried to think of everything it could be she casually mentioned that on Thursday he grabbed a piece of banana she was eating, but didn't think he even ate much.

She left. I called my parents. I called his dr.'s cell phone and explained that my son had worms. He said bring him in first thing Monday. I called josh and explained to him that our son had worms. Josh called me back and told me our son had banana.

After a little internet research and thanks to many other panicked mothers of banana fed babies, we learned two things: 1) Banana's constipate babies 2) Baby banana poop looks like worm poop. SONNY  DOES NOT HAVE WORMS. Here is a Zoomed in picture of the "worm":

Gross right?
So much for keeping this short. I could have just said:

When you feed a baby bananas don't be alarmed if their poop looks like worms. It's normal.

Can I make it 12 steps?

an addiction. i have one. i know it's an addiction because i hide it. And my friend Shaniqua said that is how she knew of her sugar addiction. and i am no longer in denial. my other friend Miggy also has this problem. Is it a Mormon thing? Is it because we generally don't have other "toxins" we ingest? No Alcohol. No Tobacco. No Coffee. No Tea (herbal is ok). No drugs. So we take all the energy we would spend on those vices and throw it lightning fast at sugar? I think so. I've dabbled in all of the above and when I did, I sure didn't freak out on sweets like I do now.

I have to stop. Back up, I have to sloooow down. I try. Oh do I try. I see a cookie in the kitchen I walk past it in victory, then I literally walk backwards to the kitchen and eat the dang cookie. Cookie wins every time. Normally this would not be a problem. I think sweets are fine in moderation and as long as you are keeping active to balance out the intake then, cool. It's all good. Eat those cookies and candies and brownies and cakes and ice-creams and cream puffs to your hearts content. As long as it is balanced out. But NO, right now it's not. I am eating more then I am working off. And I am not ok with that.

I sneak my sweets now because I know I shouldn't be eating them. I say "Ok, one easter candy is ok." then I put the rest away and when no one is looking I eat another. NO ONE CARES. The fact that i hide it is bad news.

One time a few years ago, I really wanted a York Peppermint Patty. So I bought one and I thought "I'm going to eat this in the car on the way home and that way Josh won't know I ate it. I got home and this happened:
j: What did you eat that was chocolate?
c: Nothing.
j: Oh yeah?
c: Yeah. I didn't have any chocolate, why?
j: Well you have chocolate all over your face.

See? Busted. and you know what? Josh didn't care if I had that York or not. I didn't have to hide it.

I can't even tell you how many bags of chocolate chips we go through in this house. I can't tell you because I can't count that high. Every time I go to Trader Joe's I buy about 10. They don't last. Sometimes we will make a dessert every night and each time, we use a half bag of chocolate chips. Sometimes more. I LOVE CHOCOLATE CHIPS. I've been know to put them in my cereal for breakfast. Trail Mix- only if it has chocolate chips.

I'm going to go this WHOLE WEEK with no chocolate chip any thing - Make that NO special treat. I will allow myself baked goods and sweets only Friday-Sunday. I can do this. I will eat fruit. Starting now. I wish I didn't have those 4 cookies on the counter.

p.s. Fresh Direct Chocolate Chip Cookies are REALLY good.

1812 Swaddle Overture

We started recording Sonny every morning when we unswaddle him. Josh put together a short music video that I know you will love.

We didn't know the name or composer of the music so josh Googled "Song with cymbals da da da da da da da da da" and he found it. The internet is a neat place.

Feel free to watch it again.

4 Months

We took these pictures 2 weeks ago when Sonny turned 4 months old. Josh is usually behind the camera for the big Sonny shoots but I helped out a little this time. Enjoy the wonder that is my son and the handsomeness that is my husband.

and these

You're Welcome.

Wedded Bliss Part 1

Cicely + James = Cicelyjames. hehe. No really, Cicely + James = LOVE. What a lovely wedding weekend we had! I wish I took more pictures. boo. This post and all other Cicely wedding posts will rely heavily on stolen pictures.

Thursday was the bachelorette party, just as silly as I imagined it would be. We had SO MUCH FUN though. Dinner was thumbs down. Over priced under flavored food. Don't eat here. After we ate we went to Cowboys and it was a blast. I WISH I could line dance. The dance floor was filled with groups of people moving in unison wearing cowboy boots and knowing when to tap their heel vs. their toes and then there was us. We tried. We were a sad sight though I am sure. Highlights of the evening include: Real live cowboys, Gwen getting burned with Jackie's cigarette, Cicely blowing her drink in Gwen's eye, Cowboy lap dances but the winning moment was when Cicely asked - no, begged the cop to show her his penis since it was her party and she hadn't seen a "real live penis" all night (keep in mind heavy drinking did occur).

yes, those are penis straws in the drinks

Saturday we had the rehearsal in the morning then all the girls (+Sonny) went for manicures/pedicures before rushing back to the hotel to get ready for the rehearsal dinner. Cicely looked beautiful. Her dress was awesome and reminded me of Esmeralda on Bewitched (my favorite TV show growing up). Son nearly stole the show though cause he is the cutest baby in the world.

Next wedding post will have actual wedding pictures.

Milestones are not Mild

At 20 weeks Sonny does the following:
  • Eat his toes
  • Screeches like an Eagle
  • Laugh, laugh & laugh
  • Smiles
  • Loves to get startled
  • Rolls. a. lot. Gone are the days of easy diaper changes and easy swaddling
  • Drinks water from a glass like a big boy- with two hands (not a sippy cup, a man glass)
  • Chews on EVERYTHING he can get his hands on*
  • Reaches out to me and josh to hold him (<3)>
  • DROOLS*
  • Sings himself awake and to sleep
  • Rides in Limos
  • Wiggles
  • Steals hearts
  • Is happy.
* Teething

I love my little man cakes.

Tonight, when he was helping me make dinner I gave him a piece of Kale to play with. It kept him busy for at least 6 minutes.
